Are You Absorbing Your Supplements — or Just Flushing Them?
Happy Sunday,
If you’ve ever taken a supplement and thought, “Why don’t I feel any different?” — you’re not alone.
This is one of the most common things I see: clients investing in high-quality supplements but still feeling stuck. Why? Because absorption starts in the gut. And most people haven’t tested to see what’s actually going on there.
When your gut barrier is damaged or inflamed — which is more common than you think (1 in 3 Americans have some form of gut dysbiosis or barrier dysfunction, even without obvious symptoms) — your ability to absorb and use nutrients drops dramatically.
And if you have an autoimmune or neurological condition, over 80% of individuals in these groups show signs of intestinal permeability.
Zonulin & Leaky Gut-
One of the first markers I look at on a stool test is Zonulin. Elevated zonulin signals a “leaky” gut lining — tiny gaps between intestinal cells that allow toxins, undigested food, and bacteria into the bloodstream.
This triggers inflammation, immune responses, and directly interferes with nutrient absorption — especially for magnesium, B12, iron, and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K).
If your zonulin is high, your gut lining needs repair before your supplements can truly work.
The Power of Akkermansia-
Low levels of Akkermansia muciniphila — a keystone gut microbe — is another red flag. This beneficial bacteria helps maintain your mucosal lining (your gut’s protective barrier), and when it’s low, you may struggle with:
Nutrient malabsorption
Chronic inflammation
Food sensitivities
Weight loss resistance
Sluggish metabolism
The good news? We can bring it back with the right prebiotic-rich foods, gentle detox support, and lifestyle shifts.
Supplements are powerful — but only when your gut is ready to receive them. If you’ve been doing all the “right” things and still don’t feel better, it’s time to look deeper.
